Hello Glams,
When a little boy asserts himself, he’s called a “leader.” Yet when a little girl does the same, she risks being branded “bossy.”
It is my belief that as parents, it is always our duty to do our part to ensure that what we are teaching our children falls in line with what not only is right morally, but also what will be of benefit to our children in the future. With that in mind, I must admit that I was a little excited to hear about a new movement, Ban Bossy, that hopes to remove the word “Bossy” from schools and the workplace.
Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook and author of “Lean In”, believes that the term “bossy” is actually discouraging young girls from reaching their full potential. Because the term is associated with other negative words, like pushy or stubborn, girls keep their hands down during class or pass up leadership roles to avoid being disliked by classmates.
To me, this makes total sense. I must admit, I have used the word “bossy” in the past, even as recent as a few months ago when I talked about my almost 2-year-old niece and her antics to control my son. I think we’ve all probably used the word at one time or the other and never really stopped to think about the potential deeper effects of this seemingly simple word.
In an effort to encourage girls to assert themselves, and to do so with pride, Sandberg has joined forces with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Girl Scouts USA to launch the Ban Bossy Public Service Announcement. The idea is also supported by some of our favorite celebrity moms, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Beyonce, Jennifer Garner and Diane von Furstenberg.
