Breast Cancer Awareness: The Importance of Early Detection Within the African American Community
Hello Ladies,
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is the perfect time to spread the word about the importance of early detection when it comes to Breast Cancer amongst your family, friends and everyday acquaintances.
Although breast cancer continues to impact people from all backgrounds, there are significant differences within the mortality rates among racial groups. During the early 1980s, breast cancer death rates for white and African American women were about equal, but during 2001-2005 African American women had a 37 percent higher death rate. With this information in mind, the Susan G. Komen Foundation created “The Circle of Promise,” a movement designed to engage African American women to help end breast cancer forever by fostering increased awareness, support, empowerment and action. Current ambassadors for the program include Carla Ferrell, program director and co-host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show; Sybil Wilkes, co-host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and Cafe Mocha, the nationally syndicated radio show created by and for African American women.
Ladies, I truly encourage you to get tested and ensure that your loved ones are also being tested on an annual basis.
