Glams,
I was recently reading a report from BabyCenter on the State of Modern Motherhood and one of the stats that truly stuck out for me was the fact that according to the report, 65% of women with children under 6 years old work; about 2x more than the previous generation.
Gosh, have times changed from our grandmothers and even our mother’s days.
After reading the report I started thinking even more about how us career moms (I’m also talking about those moms who are business owners!) have so much to balance and not enough time to do it.
As a mother of a super busy two-year-old son I can tell you that life is extremely busy nowadays. Gone out the window are the days when I could just offer my son a bottle, burp him and then watch him peacefully fall off to sleep before placing him into his 4 Moms mamaRoo.
My current life is spent playing countless hours of basketball, race cars and reading plenty of books with my son, while also balancing the responsibilities that I have with my career. I spend lots of evenings logging back onto email after my son has drifted off to sleep and can often be found online in the wee hours of the morning getting a head start on the work that needs to be completed the following day.
To say that life is a constant balancing act is a pure understatement. In fact, in my opinion, life is more like a roller coaster ride. You have twists and turns, some you can foresee, others totally unexpected. It’s all super exciting, but I’ll be the first to admit, very exhausting at times.
As a career mom in 2015, there are five truths that I’ve discovered and wanted to share.
There is no such thing as the perfect balance
Before becoming a mom I thought that I had it all figured out. I would spend X amount of time with my husband and son then have X amount of time left over for me. Fast-forward to now and it’s just not the way it all works out. I’ve learned that there is no such thing as the perfect balance. There will be times when your duties as a mother will be in overdrive (nursing a sick toddler back to health) and other times when it will seem like your career is taking over. Again, there’s just no such thing as a perfect balance.
You Need A Support System
I will be the first to admit that I thought that I could do this with no real support. I’m not talking about the support of my husband either. Actually I did pretty much do the whole mommy to a newborn without the assistance of anyone. However, as my son has gotten older, I’ve realized that you definitely have to have some sort of support system in place. You will lean on this team for the times when you need to focus on your career and for the times when you just need a couple of hours to yourself.
Your Kids Will Still Love You, Even If You Choose To Have a Career
One of my biggest fears is that since I travel as part of my career that my son would forget about me as his mommy. I know, it sounds really crazy, but that was definitely a big fear of mine. Trust me, I was totally that mother who had her mother or her husband along with her son in tow when she traveled on business trips during his first year of life. However, as my son has gotten older, I realize that if I’m gone on business for a day or two, he still loves me just the same when I get home.
Busy Is The Name Of The Game
You will forever be busy. Period. Point Blank. Your life will forever be about trying to squeeze everything that needs to be completed into your schedule. Your days of consecutively living in leisure are gone, except of course when you are taking a much-needed vacation!
It gets a little easier as they get older
In my opinion, being able to communicate more with your child as they get older, makes the process of being a career mom a little bit more easier. You are at least able to explain to them that you are leaving and that you’ll be back. For me, that has made the act of being a career mom in 2015 just a tad bit easier.
So glams, there you have it. Just a few of my truths when it comes to being a career mom in 2015. I would love to hear from you and find out what some of your “career mom truths” are. Share with us in the comments section below.
